SCREEN MESH

Screen mesh (fr: Grillage de tamisage ): When wire mesh is used as a screen or filter.

SCHEDULE (OF A PIPE)

Schedule (of a pipe) / (fr: Cédule, d’un tuyau): The term used to describe the thickness of a pipe.

SEAMLESS TUBE

Seamless tube (fr: Tube sans soudure): A tubular product that does not have any welding seam. This tube is manufactured by hot-working steel or, in some cases, by subsequently cold-finishing the hot-worked tubular product to create the desired shape, dimensions, and properties.

SHEARING

Shearing (fr: Cisaillement): The action of cutting by two blades along a straight line to separate metal. Machines used for shearing are called squaring shears. During this operation, a narrow strip of metal is deformed to the point where it fractures at the surfaces in contact with the blades. The fracture then propagates inward and provides complete separation. Shearing is used for producing blanks.

SHEARED EDGE

Sheared Edge (fr: ): The edge of the flat bar produced by shearing or cutting.

SHEET

Sheet (fr: Feuille): Wide, flat-rolled steel. Generally, steel that is less than 3 mm thick is considered sheet. See also Plate.

SMLS

SMLS (fr: SMLS): The abbreviation that stands for Seamless.

STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel (fr: Acier inoxydable): A type of metal that is more resistant to rust, corrosion and staining than regular steel, the oxidation is not apparent at eyesight. It is an alloy of iron and carbon mixed with elements such as chromium (makes it more resistant to rust), nickel, molybdenum, silicon, aluminum . Stainless steel materials are often used in construction and tools.

STICK WELDING

Stick Welding (fr: ):  Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), using a flux-coated electrode and electric arc to join metals.

STRAND

Strand (fr: ): The solid metal strip that is cut and stretched to create the openings in expanded metal.

STRUCTURAL CHANNEL DEPTH

Structural Channel Depth (fr: Profondeur du profilé en U ): The measurement of the vertical section of the channel.

STRUCTURAL CHANNEL FLANGE WIDTH

Structural Channel Flange Width (fr: Largeur de l’aile du profilé en U ): The measurement of the horizontal section of the channel.

STRUCTURAL STEEL

Structural steel (fr: Acier de construction): A category of steel used for making construction materials in a variety of shapes. Most common structural shapes are: I-Beams, Angles, Channels, Bars, Rods etc.

STUD BOLT

Stud Bolt (fr: Goujon d’ancrage ): When threaded rod is used as an anchor or support in concrete or masonry.

SUBMERGED ARC WELDING

Submerged Arc Welding (fr: Soudage à l’arc submergé ): Welding method where the arc is submerged beneath a layer of granular flux.

SURPLUS STEEL

Surplus Steel (fr: ): Steel materials that are unused or leftover from a project, often sold as second-hand.

SWD (SHORT WAY OF THE DIAMOND)

SWD (Short Way of the Diamond) (fr: Mesure courte du losange ): The dimension of the diamond pattern measured perpendicular to the strands.
